about

“a twenty-first century update on Jimmy Giuffre’s legacy” “The music we make is not about high art or low art, it's inspired by all the folk music traditions— jazz, blues, pop and so-called ethnic music,” says Ferella, who has led many Melbourne outfits, working with some of the top jazz, roots and improvising musicians in the country.
“What we are trying to do is find our own way of expressing the ritual of music making with and for people.
We are living in a polycultural society, so this really is ‘our music’.”

The name Wayfinders was inspired by Wade Davis’s Massey Lecture series on “Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World”. Ancient Polynesian navigators who used the signs of nature to guide them on their sea journeys, wayfinders observed the stars, the sun, ocean currents and clouds to chart courses without compass or map.

Wayfinders trio hopes to communicate this deep sense of touch and oneness with the environment. Fittingly the album was recorded in the home studio of bassist Mark Shepherd, which overlooks Sherbrooke Forest, over two days in July 2015. From these sessions emerged 15 improvisations, of which six appear on the album. All unedited, complete improvisations, the tracks are named according to their order in the sessions: Day one 1-7, day two 8-15.

Completely acoustic and committed to an improvising ethos, the group is drawn to the rituals of ceremonial music, embracing sound and rhythm as a way to communicate feelings and ideas. The players have the opportunity to experience something personal and unique, yet share their experience.
